Wolverines Alumni Signs AHL Contract

Whitecourt Wolverines Alumni to play professional hockey next season

Whitecourt Wolverines alumni defenseman Mathieu Gagnon secured his plans for next season and will make the jump full time to the American Hockey League after signing a one-year contract with the Springfield Falcons, AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Gagnon, 21, spent his first professional hockey season split between the East Coast Hockey League and the American Hockey League. With the Stockton Thunder, ECHL, Gagnon recorded 3 points (1g, 2a) and collected 136 pims over the course of 43 regular season games. Gagnon’s hard nosed style of play earned himself a call-up to the Bridgeport Tigers, AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, and while he was up he made a strong impression putting up 14 pims and an even plus/minus rating in seven appearances.

As a 20 year old Gagnon the 6’2, 215 pound defenseman had a breakout start with the Whitecourt Wolverines producing 19 points (3g, 16a) in 35 games played while leading the league in penalty minutes with 259.

Coach Joey Bouchard stated, “Mathieu was an important member of our inaugural team in the 2012-13 season.  He helped create the foundation of our hockey program.   Mathieu exemplified all the qualities of a pro player on and off the ice.  He was a leader and a committed individual that played with passion and determination. His on ice presence was felt across the league and was very respected by his teammates for his “team first” attitude.  We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mathieu on his accomplishments and have no doubt that he will succeed at the pro level.”

“I will never forget my experience playing for the Whitecourt Wolverines in the AJHL.  I was able to develop my overall game and most importantly re-gain my confidence.  Coach Bouchard believed in me and allowed me the opportunity to play key minutes for the team. I really enjoyed playing in front of all the fans in Whitecourt as it was a great community to be part of.   It was a special organization to play for and they are a big part of where I am today. I wanted to thank Coach Bouchard, Brent Stark, and the whole Wolverines organization for giving me the opportunity to play in Whitecourt as it will be an experience that I will never forget.” – Mathieu Gagnon

The Whitecourt Wolverines are extremely proud to make this announcement and we wish Mathieu Gagnon all the best in this upcoming season.
