Showcase Split for Wolverines

The Whitecourt Wolverines won one and lost one at the AJHL Showcase Thursday and Friday.

 

Thursday’s game saw the Wolverines get past the Canmore Eagles in a tight 4-3 contest. Canmore scored the only goal of the first period and it was at 9:18 of the second period that Ryan Berlin scored the equalizer from Trace Elson on the power play. Mitch Owsley put the Wolverines ahead 2-1 with his goal at 13:12 of the second from Brodie Clowes and Clay Spencer. Ryan Berlin then put Whitecourt up 3-1 near the end of the second with his power play goal at 18:31 from Trace Elson. Canmore made the score 3-2 early in the third period before Evan Warmington gave Whitecourt a two goal lead again when he scored at 9:04 of the third period from Joel Herbert. Canmore scored one more on the power play late in the third period but couldn’t muster another. Whitecourt skated away with a 4-3 victory with Trevor Martin stopping 29 of 32 shots in goal for Whitecourt.

 

Friday produced a different result for Whitecourt as they dropped a 6-3 contest to the Okotoks Oilers. Okotoks had the only goal of the first period and Whitecourt would tie the game at 9:41 of the second period with Jacob Schofield’s goal from Joel Herbert and Evan Warmington. Okotoks then scored three unanswered goals to make the score 4-1 before Trace Elson scored shorthanded at 6:20 of the third period from Joel Kocur and Ryan Berlin to make the score 4-2 Okotoks. Clay Spencer got the Wolverines to within a goal when he scored at 9:07 from Jordan Davies and Evan Warmington. Okotoks closed out the scoring with two more third period goals to make the final 6-3 for Okotoks. Trevor Martin stopped 28 of 34 shots in goal for Whitecourt.

 

The Wolverines are next in action when they travel to Drayton Valley on Sunday to take on the Thunder in a 2:30 pm start.
