Wolverines Best Grizzlys

Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (29-13-5) got back in the win column Sunday afternoon with a convincing 5-1 over the Olds Grizzlys (15-31-3).

The teams skated to a scoreless draw in the first period with the Grizzlys outshooting the Wolverines 10-8 in the opening frame.

The game was nearly forty minutes hold when the scoreless tie would finally be broken.  On the first power play handed out in the game, Spencer Augot fired home a slapshot from the point to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead with 3:31 to play in the middle stanza.  Two minutes later, the Wolverines extended their lead as Jake Hobson scored his first career AJHL goal as he lead a rush into the offensive zone and had a centering pass deflect off a Grizzly defender and into the net.

The Wolverines built on their lead just 1:43 into the third period as Jude Butler let go a heavy one-timer from the left-wing circle after being set up by Liam Motley.  The Grizzlys trimmed their deficit to two goals late in the game as Parker Ward slapped in a power play goal with 5:12 left in the game.  The Wolverines answered right back two minutes later with a power play goal of their own as Yannik Bertrand spun and fired home a loose puck in the slot.  Motley would then cap the scoring with the nicest goal of the afternoon less than a minute later as he easily won a foot race to a puck in the neutral zone, broke in alone and ripped a shot top shelf.  The Wolverines were backstopped to victory by Xavier Potvin between the pipes who made several highlight reel saves throughout the course of the game.

The Wolverines are back in action on Friday night when they kick off a three-game South Division road trip against the Drumheller Dragons (24-20-3) at 7:30 p.m.
