Whitecourt Splits Weekend Games

Whitecourt’s four game winning streak was stopped on Friday night, but a new one began after Saturday’s game. Whitecourt dropped a 5-4 decision to Spruce Grove on Friday night at the Scott Safety Centre and then bounced back on Saturday night with a convincing 5-1 victory over the Grande Prairie Storm in Whitecourt.

On Friday night Whitecourt got the game’s first two goals when Colten Mayor scored at 4:16 of the first from Brandon Switzer and Mitch Owsley and then Trace Elson put Whitecourt ahead 2-0 with his goal at 11:22 from Joel Kocur and Ryan Berlin. Spruce Grove scored four unanswered goals in the second period before Ryan Berlin scored unassisted at 1:33 of the third period. Spruce scored again early in the third period to go up 5-3 and Brandon Switzer’s late unassisted goal at 18:17 just wasn’t enough as the Wolverines dropped the 5-4 decision. Tanner Kovacs stopped 29 of 34 shots in goal for Whitecourt.

It was a much different result on Saturday night as Whitecourt defeated Grande Prairie 5-1, outshooting the Storm 34-15.

There was no scoring in the first period and Whitecourt’s Evan Warmington opened the game’s scoring at 0:17 of the second period from Joel Herbert and Clay Spencer. Grande Prairie evened the score shortly after Warmington’s goal, but it was all Whitecourt after that. Colten Mayor scored on the power play at 10:16 of the second period from Matthew Abt and Trace Elson and then Jordan Davies quickly made it 3-1 with his goal at 10:51 from Evan Warmington. Ryan Berlin made the score 4-1 with his third period goal at 9:08 from Jacques Bernier and then Joel Kocur closed out the scoring with his power play goal at 15:11 from Trace Elson and Ryan Berlin. Trevor Martin stopped 14 of 15 shots in goal for Whitecourt to pick up the win.

Whitecourt is next in action when they travel to Lloydminster on Tuesday to face the Bobcats in a 7:30 pm start.
