Grande Prairie, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (6-3-2) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Grande Prairie Storm (5-4-1) on Saturday night at Revolution Place.
The Storm opened the scoring less than five minutes into the first period as Logan Mazerolle tucked home a centering pass from Dallas Comeau. The Wolverines had a quick response as on a centering pass of their own, Tyr Thompson ripped a shot top shelf to level the game at one. The teams would trade chances through the first period but remained tied as the intermission came.
The second period saw a tight defensive checking effort by both clubs that resulted in the teams remaining tied at one through 40 minutes of play.
4:47 into the third period the Wolverines took their first lead of the game after Ben Evanish had a shot blocked from the right-wing circle but stuck with it, wrapped in behind the Storm cage and tucked home his fourth goal of the season. The Storm answered back with under eight minutes to play as Comeau found the back of the net after a great individual effort to spring himself alone on a breakaway. The teams appeared to be headed to overtime but two late penalties by the Wolverines gave the Storm a 5-on-3 power play and with 19 seconds left on the clock, Justin Bernier fired home the game-winning goal.
The two teams meet again on Tuesday night at the Scott Safety Centre, puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
