Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (6-2-2) got back in the win column on Friday night with a 3-1 home ice win over the Sherwood Park Crusaders (5-3-1).
The teams finished the first period the way they started it, scoreless. The Crusaders had the better of the play in the early going while the Wolverines began to build some momentum nearing the midway mark of the opening frame.
The Wolverines carried that momentum into the second period and just 4:50 into the middle stanza, Stevie Bryant got the Wolverines on the board after a nice tip on a point shot from Tanner Foster. The Wolverines would dominate most of the second period, but Crusader’s rookie netminder Brandon Vogel stood tall to keep his team down just one goal heading to the third period.
The Crusaders started strong in the third period and at the 6:17 mark tied the game as Tyler Pang fired home a shot on a rush up ice, using a Wolverine defender as a screen. The tie game would be short lived as 9:54 into the period Liam Motley danced around a Crusader defenceman and lifted a backhand shot past Vogel to restore the Wolverine’s lead. The Wolverines defended well the rest of the way and with just 1:02 left on the clock, Spencer Bast provided an insurance marker with an empty net goal.
The Wolverines are back in action Saturday night on the road in Grande Prairie when they take on the Storm (4-4-1) at 7:30 p.m.
