Wolverines Roll Past Thunder

Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (26-12-5) completed a regular-season sweep of the Drayton Valley Thunder (11-31-1) on Tuesday night with a 7-1 win.

The Wolverines scored early and often on Tuesday; Spencer Bast opened the scoring 7:42 into the game as he stepped out from behind the Thunder net and tucked the puck past a sprawling Shawn Parkinson.  Just under two minutes later, Liam Motley increased the Wolverines lead sneaking a shot past Parkinson from the high-slot.  The Thunder answered back with their lone goal of the night with 8:10 left in the period as Joren Patenaude backhanded a puck past Wolverine goalie Xavier Potvin on a Thunder power play.  The Wolverines got a power play goal of their own just before the period was out with Estian Coetzee re-directing home a Tyr Thompson point shot.

Bast collected his second goal of the night almost exactly 20 minutes after his first as he tipped in a Jaedon Leslie shot at the 7:35 mark of the second period.  Mackenzie Harden scored his first of two goals on the night just 1:06 later as taking a pass at centre ice from Hayden Clayton, speeding around a defender and outwaiting Parkinson, sliding in a forehand shot.  Rory Dumelie would replace Parkinson after that goal and stop all 8 shots he faced in the remainder of the period.

The Wolverines got back to turning on the red light 5:09 into the third period, after a Thunder turnover behind their own net, Ben Evanish took the loose puck, had a wraparound stopped but batted in the rebound.  Harden’s second goal of the night would be the final tally as he mopped up a rebound on a power play with 9:44 left in the game.

The Wolverines return to action Friday night when they welcome the Lloydminster Bobcats (16-25-2) to the Scott Safety Centre at 7:30 p.m.
