Fort McMurray, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (33-19-7) dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons (41-13-5) on Friday night.
The Wolverines would lead twice in the opening forty minutes of the hockey game as early in the first period, Liam Motley finished off a nice passing play that included Tyr Thompson and Jaedon Leslie. The team's second lead of the game came just over six minutes in the second period with Hayden Clayton ripping home a rebound off a Tanner Foster shot. Both leads ended up being short-lived, the first was answered by a Will Conley power play goal 1:35 later and then in the second period, Reed Morison got the came back on even terms with a goal just 3:55 after Hayden Clayton's.
The Barons took their first lead of the game 4:57 into the third period as Will Conley stuffed home his second goal of the night but this time it would be the Wolverines with an answer. Exactly six minutes later, Ben Evanish scored his team-leading 32nd goal of the year on a wrap around.
The teams concluded regulation even at 3-3. Overtime would end with a controversial goal awarded to Oil Baron's forward Coy Prevost. Will Conley busted in on a breakaway but was denied by a great save by Wolverine goalie Xavier Potvin who appeared to cover the rebound and then had his glove pushed across the goal line by Prevost's stick. The goal would count and the Oil Barons picked up their second straight win over the Wolverines.
The Wolverines and Oil Barons conclude their regular seasons against each other Saturday night at the Casman Centre at 7:30 p.m.
