Spruce Grove, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines dropped their North Division Final series opener in Spruce Grove by a score of 3-2 in overtime to the Saints.
The Wolverines took the early advantage as just over five minutes into the game, Tyr Thompson poked in a rebound generated off a sharp angle shot by Yannik Bertrand. The Wolverines would maintain their 1-0 all the way to first intermission horn.
In the second period, and once again just over five minutes in, the Wolverines extended their lead to 2-0 as Spencer Bast chipped in a rebound off his own shot. The Saints answered back 59 seconds later, Parker Saretsky found the back of the net with a laser from the left-wing circle. Before the period was out, the Saints got the game even as with just under five minutes to play in the frame, Saretsky tipped In his second of the game off a blast by Jarrod Gourley on a power play.
The third period would see no goals added to the scoreboard thanks in large part to a goaltending clinic being put on by Wolverine netminder Xavier Potvin who turned aside all 17 shots he saw in the third.
In overtime, the Saints continued to press and at the 12:51 mark, Chris Van Os-Shaw slipped behind the Wolverines defence and made no mistake on a breakaway to give the Saints the game 1 win.
Game 2 of the North Division Final goes Saturday night in Spruce Grove at 7 p.m.
