Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (32-16-6) picked up their second consecutive win on Friday night with a 3-1 win over the visiting Lloydminster Bobcats (22-9-2) on First Responders Night.
The night began with a ceremonial puck drop by Whitecourt Fire Chief Brian Wynn, RCMP Cpl. Martin Lajeunesse and Associated Ambulance's Bill McAree. The Wolverines opened the scoring with five minutes to play in the first period as Mackenzie Harden went end-to-end on a dazzling rush, dancing around Bobcat defenders and ripping a shot far-side past goaltender Pierce Diamond.
The game remained locked at 1-0 until just over five minutes to play in the second period as Yannik Bertrand bull-rushed his way into the offensive zone, got the puck to Jaedon Leslie behind the Bobcat's net and he made a perfect centering pass to a wide-open Ben Evanish who rocketed a shot top-shelf. The game entered the second intermission still at 2-0 in favor of the Wolverines thanks to a highlight-reel, behind the back save by Wolverine's goalie Tye Morin.
The Wolverines built their lead to 3-0 early in the third period as Spencer Bast took a pass from Spencer Augot in the slot, while his first shot was blocked, he shoveled in the follow-up opportunity. The Bobcats would break Morin's shutout bid with just over six minutes to play in the game as Reid Irwin pinballed a puck home on a power play.
The Wolverines return to action Saturday night when they welcome the Brooks Bandits (40-12-1) to town at 7:30 p.m.
