The Whitecourt Wolverines got back on track in Grande Prairie this past weekend, sweeping games on Saturday and Sunday 5-2 and 6-3.
In Saturday night’s game, there was no scoring in the first period before Mitch Deacon got Whitecourt on the board at 3:03 of the second period from Colten Mayor and Sam Lawson. Joe Herbert scored short-handed at 12:52 of the second from Joel Kocur and Matthew Abt to stake Whitecourt to a 2-0 lead. Evan Warmington closed out the second period scoring with his goal from Joel Kocur at 15:21. Grande Prairie got on the board at 8:28 of the third period before Mitch Owsley put Whitecourt ahead 4-1 with his goal at 10:49 from Matthew Abt. Grande Prairie scored again at 12:42 before Brandon Switzer closed out the scoring at 14:22 from Clay Spencer and Ryan Berling to seal the 5-2 victory. Mac Engel and Riley Corbin split duties in goal for Whitecourt, stopping 30 of 32 shots.
Whitecourt took control of Sunday’s game early and never relinquished control of the game. Ryan Berlin opened the scoring at 3:57 of the first period from Clay Spencer and then Spencer scored at 10:29 unassisted to put Whitecourt up 2-0. Colten Mayor made it 3-0 with his goal at 12:30 from Sam Lawson and Jordan Davies. Grande Prairie scored a late goal to end the first period at 3-1. There was no scoring in the second period and while Grande Prairie scored two early goals to tie the game at three, Whitecourt stormed back with three unanswered goals to make the final 6-3. Sam Lawson scored at 5:52 from Colten Mayor and Mitch Deacon, followed by Mitch Deacon’s goal at 6:11 from Sam Lawson and Colten Mayor and then Mayor’s goal at 17:07 from Mitch Deacon and Sam Lawson. Mac Engel got the win in goal for Whitecourt, stopping 31 of 34 shots on goal.
Next action for Whitecourt comes at home this Saturday and Sunday vs. Brooks (7:00 pm-Saturday) and Okotoks (2:30 pm-Sunday).
