Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (17-5-3) saw their 11-game win streak end on Friday night with a loss to the Spruce Grove Saints (18-5-1).
The Saints jumped on the Wolverines early as goals from Chris Van Os-Shaw and Graeme Bryks in the opening 5:41 of the game gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Saints would hold that lead into the first intermission.
The second period saw the Wolverines get three power play opportunities but they couldn’t find a way to solve the leagues best penalty kill and continued to trail by a pair of goals through 40 minutes of play.
The Saints added to their lead just 45 seconds into the third period on a power play goal from Jarrod Gourley. The Wolverines finally began to generate offence in the second half of the final stanza as with 6:23 left on the clock, Spencer Bast directed home a wraparound to cut the Wolverines deficit to 3-1. With momentum on their side, the Wolverines began to buzz around the offensive zone but could not find a way to beat Saint’s rookie netminder Hayden Missler for a second time. Seth Fyten put the game out of reach as he scored into an empty net with under 30 seconds left to play.
The Wolverines are back in action at the Scott Safety Centre Saturday night when they welcome the Camrose Kodiaks (7-11-5) for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
