Wolverines snap skid, defeat Thunder

The Whitecourt Wolverines snapped a 4 game losing skid Friday night as they handed the Drayton Valley Thunder a 5-2 loss in front of 745 fans at the Scott Safety Centre.

The Wolverines opened the scoring as Matthew Abt scored his 10th goal of the season on a pass from Joel Herbert, which would go on to be the only tally of the first period.

The Wolverines would dominate the second frame but wouldn’t score until the 9:06 mark as Jordan Davies blasted his 8th goal of the season past Thunder Goaltender, Marc-Olivier Daigle, as the Wolverines would strike on the power play to make it 2-0.

The Wolverines were not done there as their backend would strike yet again as James Vermeulen would catch a loose puck in front and bang home his second of the season. The Thunder would finally get on the board as Jamie Waddington would strike to bring the Thunder within two as the Wolverines would take a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission.

The third period would see a Thunder charge as Brett Smythe would pull the Thunder within one at the 6:01 mark. However, it was Ryan Berlin who would lead the Wolverines to their 24th victory of the season with his 25th & 26th goal of the season.

Not in the lineup for the Wolverines: Gianni Mangone, Joseph Leonidas & Sam Lawson.

The Wolverines return to action tomorrow night as they travel to Sherwood Park to take on the 27-26-3 Crusaders, all the action can be seen on AJHL Web TV at 7pm.
