Drayton Valley, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (7-4-3) snapped their three-game losing streak on Saturday night with a 5-0 win over the Drayton Valley Thunder (1-11-0).
The Wolverines were held off the scoreboard in the first period but weren’t without their chances. Noah Tooke hammered a point-shot off the crossbar in the early going and then later in the period, Thunder defenceman Brett Bamber swept a puck off his own goal line preventing Vince Beaudry from scoring his first goal as a Wolverine.
Stevie Bryant broke the scoreless tie at the 6:27 mark of the second period as he batted a puck out of mid-air over the shoulder of Thunder goalie Joseph McLeod. The Wolverines extended their lead by two as they got goals from Liam Motley and Ben Evanish just 1:18 apart with under seven minutes to play in the period. Motley showed great patience as he outwaited McLeod and tucked the puck past the down and out goaltender while Evanish snuck a shot short-side from the right-wing circle.
Both Bryant and Evanish would add their second goals of the night in the third period in the first half of the frame scoring just 47 seconds apart. Bryant cut to his backhand and slipped a puck five-hole as he cruised through the slot and then Evanish chose the far-side this time with a shot from the right-wing circle. Xavier Potvin turned aside all 20 shots he faced for his 1st career AJHL shutout.
The Wolverines are back in action Wednesday night in Spruce Grove at 7:00 p.m. when they take on the Saints (8-3-1)
