Drayton Valley, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (23-10-5) emphatically snapped their five-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over the Drayton Valley Thunder (9-30-1) on Friday night.
Despite some good early pressure from the Wolverines, it would be the Thunder opening the scoring 2:38 into the opening frame as Joren Patenaude ripped a shot top-shelf from the left-wing circle. Just over five minutes later the Wolverines leveled the score as Tyr Thompson finished off a passing play between himself, Mackenzie Harden and Liam Motley by firing a shot short-side on Thunder netminder Shawn Parkinson. Tyr Thompson was right back on the scoresheet later in the period as he fired a bullet of a one-timer top-shelf with 3:12 to go in the period giving his team their first lead of the game.
The second period, like the first, started with an early Thunder goal and again it was Joren Patenaude finding the back of the net as he finished off a give-and-go with Marc-Antoine Benoit. The game stayed tied at two until just after the media timeout when Liam Motley restored the Wolverine lead by lifting a shot over the shoulder of Parkinson. Late in the period, the Wolverines began to pull away as Spencer Bast, who turned 21 on Friday, and Ben Evanish scored goals just 23 seconds apart.
The third period saw a slight pushback from the Thunder, but Wolverine netminder Tye Morin turned aside all 13 shots he faced in the period while Liam Motley and Ben Evanish each added their second goals of the night.
The Wolverines return to home ice Saturday night when they welcome the Bonnyville Pontiacs (13-19-7) to town for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
