Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (13-4-3) edged the Drayton Valley Thunder (2-17-0) by a score of 3-1 in a specialty team battle on Friday night at the Scott Safety Centre.
The game was rarely played at five-on-five with all four goals scored in the game coming on a power play. The Wolverines got the first two goals of the game, first at the 12:51 mark of the first period, Spencer Bast roofed a backhand after taking a pass from the blueline in front of the Thunder net. The second goal came 4:09 later as Stevie Bryant cleaned up a rebound in front of the Thunder net following a blast by Tanner Foster.
While the second period saw no goals, the scorekeepers were still kept busy as a total of six power plays were handed out.
In the opening moments of the third period, the Wolverines were assessed eight minutes in penalties in a span of 2:12. The Thunder finally cashed in on the power play as Josh Borynec deposited a rebound on the doorstep of the Wolverine’s crease. The Wolverines got that goal back in short order as at the 10:05 mark of the period Ryan Grant lasered shot from the left-wing circle off the crossbar and in on the team’s ninth power play of the game.
The Wolverines were able to stay out of the box the rest of the way as they skated away with their seventh straight victory.
The Wolverines are back in action Saturday night when they welcome the Canmore Eagles (9-8-1) to town for a 7:30 p.m. face off.
