Bonnyville, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (30-15-6) snapped their three-game losing streak on Friday night with a come from behind 4-3 shootout win over the Bonnyville Pontiacs (16-27-8).
The Pontiacs took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission thanks to a goal from Brendan Morrow midway through the opening frame after he jammed home a rebound.
Bonnyville built on their lead 3:22 into the second period as Adam Sandstrom scored a highlight-reel goal as he pinched down from the left point, peeled the puck off the boards and cut to the net lifting a backhand top-shelf from in tight. The Wolverines answered back just over three minutes later as Spencer Augot wired home a one-timer from the right point on a Wolverine power play. The Pontiacs took their two-goal advantage back less than two minutes later, while still shorthanded, Bobby Young skated onto a loose puck at centre ice, broke in alone and slipped a shot five-hole. Before the period was out, the Wolverines would once again close the gap to one goal as Spencer Bast lasered a puck five-hole on a two-on-rush into the Pontiacs zone with just under five minutes to play in the middle stanza.
The Pontiacs held their 3-2 lead until just over seven minutes to play in the final period, Simon Lavoie rushed the puck into the offensive zone, dropped it back to Jude Butler on the right-wing wall who swung it in front for Chase Haygarth to deflect into the back of the net.
The teams remained tied through regulation and past overtime. In the shootout, the first five-shooters were stopped before Estian Coetzee would snap a shot over the glove of Pontiac goalie Justin Travis to secure the win for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines return to action Saturday night as they pay a visit to the Lloydmister Bobcats (21-28-2) at 7:30 p.m.
