Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines are pleased to announce the hiring of Shawn Martin as the team’s new associate coach and assistant general manager.
Martin, a Wainwright, Alberta product, previously served as the head coach of the La Ronge Ice Wolves (SJHL) for the past four seasons.
He has previous AJHL coaching experience as an assistant coach with the Grande Prairie Storm, St. Albert Steel and Sherwood Park Crusaders.
“First and foremost, working for Gord (Thibodeau)”, said Shawn Martin on his decision to join the Wolverines. “Everything he’s accomplished makes him a great mentor and I have known him for awhile now, so I think that was a good fit. Also, after meeting with Brent Stark and seeing the structure and success the organization has had made this an easy choice.”
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Martin played collegiate hockey in the ACAC with both the Grant MacEwan Griffins and NAIT Ooks before going on to play minor pro for two seasons.
“The defensive side of the game is probably my strongest attribute as a coach having been a defenceman in my playing days,” added Martin on what he’ll bring to the team. “Being familiar with Gord’s style I think will also be an added positive and should make any transition that there is seamless.”
