The struggles continued for Whitecourt and Spruce Grove kept rolling in a Saints weekend sweep of a home and home series.
In Whitecourt on Friday, Spruce Grove got by the Wolverines with a 5-3 victory. Spruce Grove scored the only goals of the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the second. Newly acquired Mitch Deacon opened the Wolverines scoring at 0:27 of the second period with assists to Colten Mayor and Sam Lawson. Spruce Grove added another goal in the second to lead 3-1 after two periods. Sam Lawson scored at 0:57 of the third period from Colten Mayor and Mitch Deacon to inch the Wolverines closer at 3-2. Spruce Grove scored again to make it 4-2 before Jordan Davies scored at 13:11 from Sam Lawson. The Saints scored a late goal to seal the deal and take home a 5-3 win. Mac Engel stopped 36 of 41 shots on goal for Whitecourt to absorb the loss.
It was a different venue in Spruce Grove on Saturday, but the same result for the Wolverines as they lost a close one to the Saints 5-4. Spruce Grove peppered 44 shots at Mac Engel in this contest. Whitecourt opened the scoring at 6:44 of the first period when Mitch Deacon scored from Colten Mayor and Tyson Helgesen. Spruce Grove scored on the power play at 17:11 of the first to knot the score at one. Whitecourt took the lead again at 6:01 of the second period when Kevin Yasinski scored his first in a Wolverine uniform from Evan Warmington. Spruce Grove scored the next two before Joel Herbert scored at 17:50 of the second from Evan Warmington to tie it up at three. Spruce Grove took control with the next two goals in the third period before Evan Warmington scored at 9:06 from Matthew Abt and Joel Kocur. There was no more scoring in the contest and the Saints walked away from the weekend series with four points. Mac Engel stopped 39 of 44 shots on goal in the Wolverines net.
Next action for the Wolverines comes on Thursday, December 5 when they host the Sherwood Park Crusaders in a 7:00 pm start.
