Fort McMurray, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines were unable to close out their North Division Semi-Final series against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons on Friday night as they fell 3-2.
The Oil Barons opened the scoring late in the first period as Reed Morison fired a top-shelf shot from the left-circle on a drop pass from Ryan Conroy.
The Barons extended their lead just over six minutes into the second period as Peter Tomaras filtered home a five-hole shot on another setup by Ryan Conroy who spotted Tomaras open in front of the net from back at the blue line. Ben Evanish would bring the Wolverines to within a goal at the 12:34 mark of the second period as he sped into the Oil Barons zone, deked behind the net and stuffed home his patent 'Evanish Wraparound'.
The Oil Barons would restore their two-goal lead just over a minute into the third period as Will Conley snapped home a shot off a faceoff win. The Wolverines bounced back with a goal from Yannik Bertrand just over five minutes later as he knocked in a rebound off a Chase Haygarth shot. The Wolverines would press late for an equalizer but would not find a tying goal with Ben Evanish coming close by ringing a shot off the post with just over a minute to play.
Game six of the series shifts back to Whitecourt on Sunday night with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop at the Scott Safety Centre.
