The Whitecourt Wolverines kicked off the 2013-14 season at home against the Sherwood Park Crusaders and came away with a hard fought 8-3 victory.
In a total team effort, the Wolverines scored seven unanswered goals to separate themselves from the Crusaders in this game. Colten Mayor earned a goal and four assists for five points to lead the way for the Wolverines.
Clay Spencer got things going for Whitecourt when he scored early in the first period from Joel Kocur and Jared Jerome. Sherwood Park answered with a goal from Cody Bardock, but then Brandon Switzer would put Whitecourt ahead 2-1 late in the first period with help from Trace Elson and Colten Mayor.
The Wolverines scored both goals in the second period, with Evan Warmington putting Whitecourt ahead 3-1 at 5:05 with helpers from Joel Herbert and Ryan Berlin. Colten Mayor sent the Wolverines to the dressing room leading 4-1 with his goal at 19:30 with assists going to Trace Elson and Sean Davies.
Whitecourt blew the game open with four more unanswered goals to go up 8-1 in the third period. Clay Spencer notched his second of the game at 1:13 with assists to Jared Jerome and Joel Kocur. Brandon Switzer then quickly put in another Whitecourt goal and his second of the game at 2:09 from Colten Mayor. Trace Elson scored at 8:57 from Colten Mayor and Ben Fonteyne and Sean Davies finished the Whitecourt scoring at 12:29 with a power play goal from Colten Mayor and Trace Elson. Sherwood Park’s Sean MacTavish scored two late goals to make the final 8-3 for Whitecourt. Tanner Kovacs was solid in goal for Whitecourt.
Next up for the Wolverines is an away game in Sherwood Park Saturday, September 7 (7:00 pm) vs. the Crusaders. Next home action for Whitecourt comes on Friday, September 13 vs. the Grande Prairie Storm in a 7:00 pm start.
