Wolverines Come Up Empty in Calgary

Calgary, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines (19-7-3) dropped the final game of their weekend three-game South Division road swing on Sunday afternoon 3-2 to the Calgary Mustangs (14-14-2).

The Wolverines fell behind early as just 4:33 into the first period Chase Miller opened the scoring on a beautiful passing play between himself, Brady Barclay and Joseph Karpyshyn.  The Wolverines would get the game back even late in the frame with Spencer Bast firing home a wrist shot from the slot after a picture-perfect setup from Estian Coetzee.

Midway through the second period, the Wolverines took the lead and again it would be Bast snapping in a wrist shot, this time on a setup by Mackenzie Harden.  The Mustangs responded quickly with a goal from Karpyshyn 1:33 after the Wolverines had taken the lead.

The Mustangs retook their lead early in the third period as Yuri Chernichko stripped a Wolverine’s defenceman of the puck and converted a backhand deke on a breakaway.  The Wolverines would press for an equalizer throughout the third period but Mustang’s netminder Ashton Abel stood tall helping his team to the 3-2 victory.

The Wolverines are back in action Friday night when they pay a visit to the Drayton Valley Thunder (6-23-0) at 7:30 p.m.
