October 11 at Spruce Grove Saints

Spruce Grove Saints came into Friday’s contest off their second loss of the season. Whitecourt Wolverines on a three game winning streak. Vincent Duplessis would get the start in the net for the Wolverines and Davis in for the Saints. After an evenly matched first period the Wolverines would find themselves with a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes. Ethan Leyer would have the go ahead goal from Cole Carrier and Kaleb Ergang. Shots after the first period were 10-8 Spruce Grove Saints. Saints had a powerplay a minute into the middle frame, they would go on to hit the post three straight times and it would expire with the Wolverines still holding the lead. Minutes later Jordan Biro found the opportunity to tie the game from Stanley Cooley and Tanner Klassen. Peckford from the Saints would double their score 3 minutes later with assists going to Tanner Klassen and Cameron Chin. Shots in the second were 11 to 4 Saints. Colson Gengenbach and Cam Mitchell would double the Saints score in the first 3 minutes of the 3rd period making it 4-1 Saints. At the midway point Joshua Corrow would add a goal from Brayden Labant and Sam Anderson making it 4-2. Saints Brett Trentham and Seth Fyten would add two more for a 6-2 Spruce Grove final. Shots in the 3rd were 15-6 Saints for a final 36-18 shot clock tally. Wolverines would go 0 for 6 on the powerplay and Saints would go 0 for 3. Kaleb Ergang would be named Viterra away star of the game for the Wolverines.

October 12, Hockey Fights Cancer Night
Whitecourt Wolverines had their 4th match-up against the Bonnyville Pontiacs on October 12. The first 2 match-ups ended in a shoot out with each team walking away with a win. The Wolverines fell to the Pontiacs at AJHL Showcase in the end of September in regulation time. Pontiacs came into tonights contest on a 6 game winning streak. Vincent Duplessis would face Easton Hesse in the net for the 4th time.
Ryan Wallz opened the scoring at just 2:39 of the first period making short work of getting on the sheet in his second game as a Wolverine. Wallz came to Whitecourt on a trade with Calgary Canucks for future considerations this week. Wallz is a familar face in Whitecourt having previously played as an affiliate player for the Wolverines in the 2017-2018 season. At 6:56 Cole Carrier would capitalize on a Wolverines powerplay doubling their lead. Bonnyville would answer back at 14:31 when Jeremy Gervais would cut the lead in half, getting the Pontiacs on the board. The first frame would close with the Wolverines leading 2-1 and also leading on the shot clock 15-6. Ethan Leyer wasted no time in the second period adding Wolverines 3rd goal at 1:16 and continues Leyer’s goal per game streak to 3 games. At 18:43 Ethan Green would add Wolverines 4th goal making it 4-1 Whitecourt. Shots were 11-8 Whitecourt in the 2nd. the game would end with shots 35-23 Whitecourt with the Wolverines going 1 for 11 on the powerplay. After Saturdays game Wolverines rank 10th in the AJHL on Special teams with a 14% Smart Small Power powerplay and are 90.7% on the Anytime Fitness penalty kill which is the highest PK percentage in the AJHL. Hayden Clayton wouldn’t get on the sheet for either game but continues to lead the Wolverines in points, and has surpassed his assists in the 2018-2019 season. Kaleb Ergang would again be awarded the Viterra Star of the Game for his outstanding play.
