The Wolverines are proud to announce that 6-time Stanley Cup Champion, 7-time NHL All Star and Hockey Hall of Famer Kevin Lowe, will be our guest of honour for our annual speaker series.
Kevin Lowe is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and executive, best known for his contributions to the Edmonton Oilers during their 1980s dynasty. Born on April 15, 1959, in Lachute, Quebec, Lowe began his career with the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he became the team’s first Anglophone captain.
Drafted as the Oilers’ first-ever NHL pick in 1979, Lowe scored the Oiler’s first ever goal, played 15 seasons with Edmonton never missing the playoffs, contributing to five Stanley Cup victories (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990). In 1994, he won a sixth Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers. Lowe was one of seven former Oilers to help lead the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup in 54 years. Known for his defensive skills, Lowe played in 1,254 NHL regular season scoring 431 points and logging 1,498 penalty minutes along with 214 playoff games. He is one of only three defensemen in league history to score two short handed goals in a Stanley Cup final series (1987) and is one of only 45 players in league history to have played in 1,000 games with one franchise.
After retiring in 1998, Lowe transitioned to coaching and management. He served as the Oilers’ head coach, general manager, and later President of Hockey Operations, influencing the team for decades off the ice. In recognition of his career, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020 and received the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2021. The QMJHL’s award for the best defensive defenseman, the Trophée Kevin Lowe, is named in his honor.

Both awards are presented for leadership and Humanitarian contributions. His work for the Edmonton Christmas Bureau has set the standard for the Oilers’ commitment to community involvement and till this day, 40+ years later, Lowe remains the Christmas Bureau’s Honorary Chair.
