Despite outshooting the Grande Prairie Storm 41-24, the Whitecourt Wolverines dropped a 4-3 overtime decision in front of 986 at the Scott Safety Centre Friday night .
Trace Elson scored all three goals for the Wolverines and currently leads the AJHL in scoring with nine points in three games.
Elson got the Wolverines on the board first with a power play goal at 2:13 of the first period from Matthew Abt and Tanner Kovacs. Grande Prairie made the score 1-1 when Sam Lawson scored at 13:06 of the first period.
Elson put Whitecourt up again in the second period with another power play marker at 1:05 from Clay Spencer and Colten Mayor.
Grande Prairie responded in the third with two unanswered goals before Whitecourt knotted the score late in the third period with another Trace Elson goal from Matthew Abt and Tyson Helgesen. Grande Prairie’s Ryan Baskerville settled the game with his goal at 3:49 of overtime. Tanner Kovacs was in goal for Whitecourt, stopping 20 of 24 shots.
Next game action for Whitecourt comes on Sunday, September 15 at home in the Scott Safety Centre in a 2:30 pm start.
